California: Eliminate Unnecessary Police Interaction in Schools (AB 2441)
AB 2441 would protect students from unnecessary contact with the legal system and decrease school related law enforcement referrals and arrests. Educator discretion in determining when to notify law enforcement about a student’s school related behavior would increase. In addition, school staff would no longer be prosecuted when choosing to not notify law enforcement of various student behaviors. Therefore, schools will be empowered to adopt non-punitive models to effectively support students with more compassion. Students would also no longer experience criminal penalties for the “willful disturbance” of public schools and public school meetings. Passing this legislation is an important step towards empowering educators and disrupting the school-to-prison pipeline in California.
